Markus Guentner Announces IN MOLL Anniversary Edition

Markus Guentner’s seminal ambient project, IN MOLL, is set for a 25th Anniversary Edition release via Black Knoll Editions. This reissue serves to provide a more complete physical representation of one of the most influential ambient records from the early 2000s. Fans can expect the release on November 6, 2026, with preorders currently live. As a preview, the track IN MOLL 4 has been made available for streaming.
The inclusion of IN MOLL 4 is particularly significant, as it was notably absent from the initial vinyl pressing. By restoring this piece and bringing it to the format, the anniversary edition functions as a long-awaited correction to the album’s physical legacy rather than a standard archival reissue.
First released in 2001, the album emerged during the formative era of Kompakt’s Pop Ambient series. Guentner quickly became a defining figure in the movement, characterized by a softer, more textural approach to electronic composition. The record is celebrated for its patient harmonic development, delicate melodic fragments, and deep, resonant bass, relying on a subtle sense of scale rather than overt dramatics.
The enduring quality of IN MOLL lies in its restraint. While much of the ambient music from that period has aged according to the production trends of the time, Guentner’s work remains relevant because it was constructed with a focus on essential, high-quality sonic decisions.
Guentner’s history with Kompakt is integral to this legacy. Before the full-length, he contributed to the label's debut Pop Ambient compilation with Regensburg 1, a track inspired by his Bavarian home. This early work caught the attention of label heads Michael Mayer and Wolfgang Voigt. Reflecting on that time, Mayer has noted that hearing Guentner's music alongside Voigt was an immediate realization that they had discovered something uniquely beautiful. Voigt has consistently identified Guentner as a foundational artist within the label's history.
For this anniversary release, Black Knoll Editions founder Rafael Anton Irisarri has provided a full analog remaster. This technical approach is crucial for ambient music, where the interplay of silence, decay, and low-end bloom determines the emotional impact of the soundscape. Irisarri’s expertise in balancing weight and delicacy makes him an ideal choice for this project, as he brings a deep understanding of how to maintain sonic integrity without compromising the original atmosphere.
The 25th Anniversary Edition of IN MOLL arrives on November 6, 2026. In addition to the restored track and analog remastering, the release features updated visual presentation by Guentner and will be available on both vinyl and digital formats.
