Mariah Carey finds herself in the center of a storm! Songwriter Vince Vance has filed a lawsuit accusing Carey of piracy. Carey’s almost three-decade-old holiday season chartbuster ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ is the piece in question. Vance’s earlier song titled ‘Queen of Christmas’ had seen a similar lawsuit being filed by him more than a year ago. Carey was at the receiving end of this one as well.
The 1994 release of ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ had ruled the holiday season back then. An estimated 1.47 billion Spotify streams adds credence to its potential. Vince Vance, whose real name is Andy Stone, accuses Carey of piracy of his song. Carey’s hit apparently has elements directly stolen from his original.
“Carey has without licensing, palmed off these works with her incredulous origin story, as if those works were her own.”
“Her hubris knowing no bounds, even her co-credited songwriter doesn’t believe the story she has spun. This is simply a case of actionable infringement.”

Stone had earlier accused Carey for identical reasons in June 2022 for ‘Queen of Christmas’. Apparently, even the title was copied. The consequent lawsuit was dropped in November of the same year. Stone had now registered a complaint with the Los Angeles Federal Court on November 1 for infringement of the copyright of his song under the same name.
‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ was recorded by himself (Stone) and Valiants in 1989, as per the fresh lawsuit. Carey, producer Walter Afanasieff and Sony Music Entertainment have been called out in this new lawsuit.
