Last weekend, the iconic Navy Pier in Chicago served as the backdrop for the return of the Purified event series. Amidst the atmospheric, rain-swept setting, we had the opportunity to sit down with the Dutch producer Corren Cavini. Following a breakout year defined by his debut album, A Place To Call Home, Cavini offered a candid look into his creative process, the healing power of music, and the importance of vulnerability in his work.
Known for his high-energy, physically commanding performances, Cavini has become a staple in the melodic house scene. Whether he is playing in Amsterdam, Berlin, or São Paulo, his ability to connect with an audience is palpable. Reflecting on his recent tour, including a memorable set in San Diego, he noted that the synergy between the environment and his sound is essential. “For me, inspiration comes from feeling something,” he explained. “I get very inspired by interactions with people and places. When I create these memories, I often feel the need to express that and turn it into a melody.”
The Creative Process and Emotional Depth
One of the most significant aspects of Cavini’s artistry is his willingness to explore personal trauma and emotional pain through his music. He admits that his transition into more emotional, introspective soundscapes coincided with his own journey through therapy and self-discovery. “It’s no coincidence that it was the same era when I began making emotional records,” he shared. “I’m telling stories that mean a lot to me, and even if they don’t have words, I think somehow that translates.”
His collaboration with Nora En Pure and the Purified label has been instrumental in this evolution. Cavini emphasizes that working with people he trusts is non-negotiable. “If I make something very personal and vulnerable, I want to be able to trust the person that I send it to. I don’t want to work with somebody who is very business-focused about this. For me, it should always be about emotion.”
Looking Ahead: New Music and Community
As he looks toward the future, Cavini is focused on growth and experimentation. He is currently working on a new track titled ‘Magic,’ featuring New Zealand-based singer Down Under, which he describes as one of his most deeply emotional works to date. Furthermore, he is building a new community-focused brand called Common Ground, which aims to foster connection and unity on the dance floor.
“I’m trying to figure out new aspects of my sound without losing my core,” he said. “I’m giving myself some space to figure that out because it takes time. It’s about making experiments and seeing which ones land.”
