Ibiza To Have “Villa Shortages” This Summer

Ibiza is apparently about to have its busiest summer yet. If you haven’t booked your accommodations yet, you might want to soon. The President of the Balearics has warned that there will be “villa shortages” this summer. On top of that, tourists will be expected to pay a “visitors tax” when they arrive.

Francina Armengol said in an interview that accommodation shortages will affect each of the Balearic islands this summer, including Ibiza, Mallorca, and Menorca. She was quoted saying:

“We propose zero growth in tourist, hotel and vacation rental places, maintaining the ban on vacation rentals in multi-family homes and to fight against illegal offers [of accommodation],”

Her plan is also to buy 1 or 2-star hotels and convert them into protective housing for locals. The plan follows a bill passed in 2022 capping the expansion and growth of tourist accommodation, which has caused a housing crisis across the Balearics.

Tourism tax will also be put in place this year for those traveling to the White Isle. During peak season, the tax will go up to €4 per night and applies to anyone over the age of 16. It was calculated this will earn an extra €500 ($535) million. Locals have urged for an even higher tourist tax to reduce the number of people traveling to the islands in summer months.

You can see, they are not a fan of the tourist season.
