A Burning Man attendee required a complicated rescue after falling from a 55-foot-tall structure at Black Rock City on Tuesday. The incident occurred as the festival was in full swing, drawing immediate attention from emergency services and fellow participants.
Emergency crews responded to the Square One camp at approximately 6:20 p.m. on September 1. The injured man had fallen two levels from near the top of the camp’s 10-level Nest Tower, according to witnesses who spoke with SFGATE. Bystanders reported that the man landed on a metal crossbar during the fall, sustaining injuries to his head, ribs, and hip, though official details regarding his condition remain limited.
The rescue operation proved challenging due to the height and structure of the tower. Emergency responders climbed the installation to stabilize the man while a construction vehicle was brought in to provide an aerial platform. Once secured, the attendee was lowered to the playa, where medical personnel transferred him to a gurney for evaluation. The individual, identified as 30 years old, was subsequently transported to Rampart, the festival’s temporary hospital.
A Complicated Rescue on Tutu Tuesday
The emergency unfolded during one of Burning Man’s most recognizable traditions: Tutu Tuesday. Participants across Black Rock City were dressed in tutus, a theme that extended to the emergency responders who carried out the rescue. Despite the lighthearted nature of the day, the situation remained grave as crews worked to stabilize the man at such a significant height.
Square One camp leaders Lee and Gaby Merschon noted that the Nest Tower has been a fixture at the festival since 2021. While the structure has grown in height over the years, they confirmed that Tuesday’s incident was the first injury associated with the installation.
This event highlights the inherent risks of large-scale, temporary art installations in the remote desert environment. Previous years have seen similar incidents, such as the 2024 fall of Rachael Gingery, who suffered significant injuries after falling from an art installation. These accidents underscore the unique medical challenges faced by Burning Man organizers.
Burning Man Continues Through a Difficult Week
The Nest Tower rescue occurred during a particularly challenging week for the festival. Heavy rains transformed parts of the playa into mud, forcing temporary closures of the event’s entrance and airport. Furthermore, organizers confirmed the death of a participant in his mid-50s following a medical emergency on September 3, despite immediate life-saving efforts by on-site medical staff.
As of now, the Burning Man Project has not released further updates regarding the condition of the attendee who fell from the Nest Tower. The festival is scheduled to continue through September 7 in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert.
