A Burning Man attendee required a complicated rescue after falling from a 55-foot-tall structure at Black Rock City on Tuesday. Emergency crews responded to the Square One camp at approximately 6:20 p.m. on September 1. The injured man had fallen two levels from near the top of the camp’s 10-level Nest Tower, according to witnesses who spoke with SFGATE.
Bystanders said the man landed on a metal crossbar during the fall. He appeared to strike his head, ribs and hip, although officials have not released details about his injuries. Reaching him presented another challenge. Some emergency responders climbed the structure and stabilized the man while another crew cleared space below. A construction vehicle then entered the camp carrying an aerial platform that crews raised to his position.
Responders loaded the man onto the platform before carefully lowering him back to the playa. Medical personnel transferred him to a gurney and checked his vital signs. When they asked his age, he responded that he was 30. An ambulance then transported him to Rampart, Burning Man’s temporary hospital. No further update on his condition has been made public.
A Complicated Rescue on Tutu Tuesday
The emergency unfolded during one of Burning Man’s more recognizable traditions. September 1 was Tutu Tuesday, when participants across Black Rock City wear tutus regardless of their other plans for the day. The injured attendee was wearing one at the time of the accident. About half of the emergency crew responding to the fall were also dressed in tutus as they carried out the rescue.
Behind the unusual visuals, however, crews faced a serious situation high above the desert floor. The Nest Tower stands approximately 55 feet tall and contains 10 levels, requiring responders to reach and stabilize the attendee before they could move him. Square One camp leaders Lee and Gaby Merschon told SFGATE that their camp has constructed the Nest Tower at Burning Man since 2021. They have made the structure taller over successive years and said Tuesday’s incident marked its first injury.
The accident adds to the medical emergencies that occur each year in Black Rock City. Burning Man’s combination of large-scale art, temporary structures and remote desert conditions creates challenges that differ considerably from conventional festivals. Falls from elevated structures have caused serious injuries in previous years. In 2024, Burning Man attendee Rachael Gingery fell approximately 20 feet from an art installation resembling a sinking ship. The accident fractured her spine and a rib and punctured a lung. She eventually recovered and returned to Burning Man.
Burning Man Continues Through a Difficult Week
The Nest Tower rescue occurred during an event already dealing with several disruptions. Heavy rain later turned sections of the playa into thick mud and forced organizers to temporarily close Burning Man’s entrance and airport. The conditions complicated vehicle movement across Black Rock City before the gates eventually reopened.
Burning Man also confirmed that a participant in his mid-50s died after experiencing a medical emergency on September 3. This is following news of a homicide that occurred the previous year. Organizers said responders immediately provided lifesaving treatment and transported him to the onsite emergency care center, where medical personnel pronounced him dead. Despite the incidents and weather disruptions, Burning Man continues through September 7 in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. The Burning Man Project had not publicly provided additional information about the Nest Tower accident or the attendee’s condition at the time of reporting.
