For Zuzu Silk, the transition into dance music feels less like a calculated reinvention and more like a long-awaited homecoming. After making her mark through the inaugural writing camp hosted by Noir Fever and securing her position as the label’s first publishing signing, the singer-songwriter is fully embracing this vibrant sonic landscape with her latest collaboration, “Slow Down.” The track features the collaborative talents of Selena Faider and the California-based electronic duo Bali.
“I love to dance. I love feeling so moved by music that I have to dance. That’s where I feel the most me,” Zuzu explains. While her earlier work explored the intimate, sultry textures of R&B and soul, she found that those genres didn’t quite capture the same energy as the dance floor. “Making more intimate music was I think god’s way of getting me used to writing from my soul, but it didn’t resonate the same way dance music does. It feels very tribal and a part of my purpose to be around.”
Refining the Sound with Aluna
A pivotal element of Zuzu’s evolution has been the mentorship provided by Aluna, the founder of Noir Fever. Aluna encouraged the artist to lean into the natural, understated quality of her voice, steering her away from the high-energy belting techniques she mastered during her background in musical theater.
“I came from musical theater and was taught if you’re a singer you have to sang and belt and give energy in your vocals,” Zuzu notes. “But focusing on refining the more relaxed sound, especially in this type of music, is something Aluna keeps reminding me is a super power. I think it’s so rewarding in any kind of artist development when a program you’ve had about yourself can break and you can really see what’s possible.”
The Making of “Slow Down”
The creative process behind “Slow Down” was organic, beginning in an informal session at Aluna’s home studio. “Me and Bali originally made that song in Aluna’s home studio, just messing around,” she recalls. “Bali had a connection with Selena and shared the track with her and she put her spin on it, and it sounded amazing. The rest is history!”
The resulting track balances a warm, driving house groove with Zuzu’s signature silky vocals. Lyrically, the song explores the exhilaration of pursuing a romance at full speed, even when external voices suggest caution. “I’m a lover girl, when I like something I like to go full speed towards it. Sometimes people tell you to slow down but it feels so good to just free myself up to go as fast and as deep as I want to.”
A Frequency for Balance
Beyond the lyrics, the track is technically tuned to 432 Hz rather than the industry-standard 440 Hz. Zuzu views this as a deliberate choice to create a physical, equalizing experience for the listener. “It’s meant to feel equalizing to listen to. To me that also symbolizes that you can remain centered while living a wild life. Balance.”
With this release, Zuzu Silk is not just dropping a new single; she is setting the tone for a broader project aimed at rebalancing frequencies through the power of groove. As she puts it, “This is the first in the lineup of songs meant to implement the changes. Enjoy it!”
