It’s been exactly a week since Flynn Marks came into my life and completely blew me away with his music. His latest single, ‘Waiting For Us’ is stunning and deserves everyone’s attention.
I had to jump at the opportunity to ask him a few questions to find out more about him and ask about his forthcoming EP.
2020 was a crazy year! How did you cope with it?
Hahah, it really was. There were challenging moments for sure especially up until July(ish) when I was trying to finish my degree. Nightmare! I just had to really focus on what was making me happy and invest my time into that. Taking time away from my phone was very important for me. Establishing a routine and lots of songwriting too – it helped me feel somewhat productive!
What helped you pass the time?
A lot of Netflix, maybe too much haha. I love my daily walks as they really split up my day and sometimes I’d be out for a few hours so that was always a bonus haha.
How has this year been for you so far?
This year so far has been much better than 2020 already haha. There’s definitely a light at the end of the tunnel, and I just can’t wait to be able to go out and about and play/watch live shows!!
What was it like working on the EP?
I loved working on the EP, all of the songs had been already written so it was a case of just recording and compiling the songs together. It was really good, as I had time to figure out how I wanted it to be sung, and I had plenty of time to rehearse/improve the songs where needed.
I always really enjoy the recording process especially listening back to what you’ve created in the session, it’s a really therapeutic feeling.
What inspired ‘Waiting for Us’?
‘Waiting for Us’ was inspired from my own personal experiences/feelings, as well as people who are close to me and their experiences too. I was on my way to the session and I couldn’t stop thinking of those conversations I had with people and how common these feelings are. I felt really inspired to write a song which was quite vulnerable and highlighted being on the receiving end of an uncertain relationship.
What would you want people to know about you and your music?
I’d like people to know that I strive to write music about real/raw experiences, good and bad, by sharing my truths hopefully it will make people feel less alone if they are struggling with something. I see my music as a bit of an emotional haven for people, I write music that resonates with people and hopefully it can assist in healing some wounds or just allow people feel supported in that moment. I use songwriting to help my own mental health, and hopefully by sharing these songs I can help others in similar positions too.
Who has been your biggest influence?
There’s way too many to pick one haha! I grew up on a vast array of music from Stereophonics and The Black Crowe’s all the way to Rihanna and Fergie. I find influence from all genres and all artists, and the way I write is by reforming ideas that I like from all music scenes and then putting my own spin on things. Country/Pop and Folk are quite prominent genres for me, but I also love Hip-Hop, R&B and Rap too. I am a sucker for well written lyrics, a catchy hook/chorus and some sense of passion/emotion behind the performance. This brings all the genres together for me.
Who are you listening to at the moment?
At the moment, I am loving Faouzia, Joy Oladokun, Donna Missal and Chloe x Halle. All are insanely talented artists and I love listening to what they’re creating.
What else can fans expect from you in the coming months?
Quite a lot, hopefully!! The EP will drop in April, and then I’ll be working on the next set of releases after that! And once the venues are open I want to get performing again, I’ve missed it way too much!
