For Nashville-based singer, songwriter, and guitarist James Bruner, rock and roll has always represented more than just a genre; it is a fundamental source of identity, rebellion, and connection. Growing up in Springfield, Illinois, Bruner discovered his musical path through the lens of skate culture, finding early inspiration in the sounds of David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath. This early exposure to the counter-culture spirit of the skatepark instilled in him a fearless approach to his craft, eventually leading him to leave the University of Kansas to pursue his artistic ambitions in Nashville.
A New Chapter in Rock
Since launching his solo career in 2023, Bruner has cultivated a distinct sound that bridges the gap between hard rock, classic rock, and modern pop sensibilities. His debut album, Can’t Keep Wanting You, serves as a culmination of his journey thus far. Created over several years alongside producer Shane Weisman, the record is a heartfelt homage to the artists who helped him find his own voice, including Lenny Kravitz, Palaye Royale, Jet, and Prince.
The album explores complex themes of love, desire, and defiance, acting as a thank-you letter to the music that once made him feel seen. “It’s a tip of the hat to my idols,” Bruner explains. “While there’s a ton of different themes and vibes sprinkled through each song, this album is my journey through my trials and errors.”
The Power of Creative Risk
Bruner’s evolution from his earlier EP, The Otherside, to this debut record is marked by a willingness to embrace the unknown. Having toured extensively across the U.S., U.K., and Europe with acts like The Struts, Orianthi, and Barns Courtney, he has learned that the stage is the ultimate teacher. “Take risks,” he advises. “The more comfortable you are doing that on stage, the more comfortable you will be in the studio.”
This philosophy of getting “comfortable being uncomfortable” has allowed Bruner to push his vocal boundaries and songwriting structures. Whether he is channeling the falsetto of Prince or the aggressive vocal delivery inspired by Palaye Royale, Bruner remains committed to authenticity. As he looks toward the future, with new live dates on the horizon and work already beginning on his second album, James Bruner continues to prove that his dedication to the rock and roll lifestyle is as strong as ever.
