Sphere Entertainment is Building a New Venue in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is the next move in Sphere Entertainment’s plan to build “a global network of venues.”

The Sphere outside Las Vegas is a big deal — literally. Boasting a wraparound interior 16k LED screen and wave field synthesis sound system, the 18,600-capacity venue has played host to acts like U2, Phish, and Dead & Company, not to mention Anyma’s upcoming six-night run of New Years Eve shows. Now, Sphere Entertainment is planning to execute a similar vision in Abu Dhabi.

According to a Sphere Entertainment press release, the new venue is part of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi‘s “Tourism Strategy 2030.” Neither entity has explicitly stated when construction is projected to begin or wrap up on the new enterprise, which the release says will be situated in a “prime spot.”

“The vision for Sphere has always included a global network of venues, and today’s announcement is a significant milestone toward that goal,” said Sphere Entertainment CEO James L. Dolan. “Sphere is redefining live entertainment and extending the reach of its transformative impact. We are proud to collaborate with DCT Abu Dhabi to develop Sphere in their city.”

“We are excited to bring Sphere to Abu Dhabi in partnership with Sphere Entertainment, providing our residents and visitors with an extraordinary new form of entertainment,” said DCT Abu Dhabi Chairman H.E. Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak. “Sphere Abu Dhabi will seamlessly integrate advanced technology with captivating storytelling, creating unforgettable memories for everyone who visits.”

The capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi wasn’t Sphere Entertainment’s first choice in their scheme to expand. Originally, a new Sphere venue was supposed to be built in London, but those plans were scrapped after the city’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, rejected its permit due to light pollution concerns.

Additional information about the Abu Dhabi expansion will be posted on the official Sphere website as it becomes available.
