Victor Bogopane aka Doc Shebeleza delivered a number of tracks near and dear to fans of the South African kwaito genre.

Victor Bogopane, a South African artist known professionally as Doc Shebeleza, has passed away at age 51 following a long battle with an undisclosed illness.

According to a statement from Bogopane’s representatives, the prolific kwaito hitmaker died peacefully on Thursday, January 9 at 10:30am in his home. The previous day, Briefly News reported that he was undergoing the latest in a long series of surgeries. Bogopane reportedly suffered from the ailment for an extended period and visited the hospital multiple times, with his condition taking a turn for the worse in recent months.

“Doc Shebeleza was a trailblazer in the South African music industry, gracing us with his electrifying energy and timeless hits, including the iconic ’90s anthem, ‘Ebumnandini,’” reads the statement. “His music united generations and left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of our nation.”

In addition to “Ebumnandini,” Bogopane — who rose to prominence in the mid-’90s — was known for kwaito hits like “Ghets Ghetsa” and “S’kumfete.” The Soweto, Johannesburg-born artist also founded the group Amaskumfete, and he influenced kwaito greats such as Mapaputsi and Mandoza.

Bogopane had a humanitarian streak as well. He famously launched a philanthropic organization called Amahaha, helping build homes for the homeless and provide wheelchairs to those suffering from disabilities, among other initiatives.

“The passing of Doc Shebeleza represents a significant loss for South Africa and the entire music industry,” wrote South African Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie in a tribute. “On behalf of the Ministry, I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and countless fans whose lives he touched. South Africa has lost not only a music legend but a compassionate soul whose contributions to our cultural heritage and community upliftment will not be forgotten.”

Bogopane is not the only South African dance music personality to pass away in recent memory. Last week, house music and Afropop star Winnie Khumalo died of a sudden illness, also at age 51.

We here at EDM Identity express our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Doc Shebeleza during what can only be a difficult time.
