Magdalene, the self-described pop star for freaks, turns the traditional show business narrative on its head with her new single, “Super Lucrative Jukebox Baby.” Accompanied by a campy and provocative music video, the track explores exploitation, excess, and the transactional relationships that can emerge in the pursuit of fame.
At the center of “Super Lucrative Jukebox Baby” is a role reversal. Rather than depicting the familiar story of male executives exploiting aspiring female artists, Magdalene presents a female executive taking advantage of a young man chasing his dreams of becoming a star.
“Super Lucrative Jukebox Baby is about a female executive exploiting a boy with dreams of being a star, flipping the typical narrative of male executives taking advantage of women on its head,” Magdalene explains. “It shines a light on how sinister this dynamic is by showing how perverse it feels hearing about a woman acting this way. Produced by Slush Puppy this song is for the freaks and women who are done adhering or succumbing to the societal norms placed on us daily, especially in the music industry. This theme is present through the entire album. If it makes you uncomfortable, then why are we enabling an industry that does it right in front of the world’s faces.”
Co-produced and written by Slush Puppy, Dylan Harrison, and Ava Morse, the track combines explosive pop hooks with indie-rock energy, creating one of Magdalene‘s most glamorous and irreverent releases to date.
The accompanying music video, directed by Mitch deQuilettes, expands on the song’s darkly campy vision of Hollywood ambition.
