Los Angeles punk band Grave Secrets are turning difficult memories into something loud, visceral, and deeply personal with their new single “Take Your Pictures Back,” out now via MDDN Records. Produced, engineered, and mixed by Alex Estrada, known for his work with Touché Amoré and Joyce Manor, the track offers the first glimpse into the band’s forthcoming six-track EP, A Place Like This, due September 11.
Driven by relentless drums and abrasive, crunching guitars, “Take Your Pictures Back” wastes little time making its impact. The song takes memories from frontman Vinny Morales’ childhood and pushes them through a wall of fast-paced punk intensity, turning personal hardship into a cathartic anthem that feels as immediate as it is reflective.
The song’s opening lyric comes directly from Morales’ experience growing up as a troubled kid sharing an otherwise empty room with his mother and a single mattress. That stark image establishes the emotional foundation for A Place Like This, an EP that confronts displacement, heartbreak, self-destruction, faith, and the complicated process of growing up surrounded by chaos.
“This song is a perfect segue into the new EP, fast, punk, but every word rooted in real stories,” says Vinny Morales. “My mom and I really shared a room with nothing but a mattress in it for a couple of years. I’m excited to share memories of my childhood we can all relate to in this new EP. Discovering hardcore music. Trying drugs for the first time. Heartbreak. Even down to exploring the never ending question that if god exists, why won’t they help me/all of us? But it’s all wrapped in chaos and fast drums/crunchy guitar tones. We put a lot of love into this one.”
That collision between painful subject matter and explosive instrumentation is central to Grave Secrets’ identity. Rather than dressing up the harder parts of growing up, “Take Your Pictures Back” embraces the messiness, using the speed and aggression of punk and hardcore as an outlet for memories that are difficult, complicated, and ultimately formative.
Formed in 2020 through the Los Angeles hardcore and emo communities, Grave Secrets have built their reputation the old-fashioned way: one show at a time. Their rise has taken them from basements and backyard performances throughout Los Angeles to stages at Vans Warped Tour stops in Long Beach and Orlando, reflecting a steady evolution from local underground act to a band reaching an increasingly wider audience.
That momentum continues into the fall with a packed touring schedule. Grave Secrets will hit the road supporting Death Lens across the West Coast beginning August 25 before joining Bayside and Driveways for a U.S. run from September 15 through October 10.
