Oliver Heldens and Kryder Reimagine Freeez’s ‘I.O.U.’ as ‘AEIOU’

Oliver Heldens has teamed up with Kryder and The Young Punx to rework one of dance music’s most sampled records. ‘AEIOU‘ takes Freeez’s 1983 hit ‘I.O.U.‘ and rebuilds it for modern club floors, out now via Heldens’ own Heldeep Records.

‘I.O.U.’ has remained a staple for over 40 years. As an early-80s boogie and electro-funk record, it continues to be sampled and referenced across house and disco-adjacent scenes. With ‘AEIOU,’ the trio preserves the unmistakable groove and iconic vocal hook while accelerating the tempo, layering in crisper percussion, driving basslines, and the kind of high-energy house production built for festival stages.

A Modern Take on a Classic

Heldens has established a reputation for digging into dance music’s rich history to provide old records with a new context, and this collaboration fits perfectly into that vision. Kryder contributes his signature brand of festival-ready house, while The Young Punx round out the production with a style deeply rooted in dance music history. The result is a three-way collaboration that respects the source material while avoiding the pitfalls of mere nostalgia.

The finished track balances two distinct eras. It retains the warmth and funk of the original disco DNA, but filters it through a contemporary house lens designed for summer festivals, late-night club sets, and sunset performances.

The Artists Behind the Sound

Oliver Heldens has amassed over 4 billion streams and multiple No. 1 hits since his 2013 breakthrough with ‘Gecko.’ Operating across the genre spectrum, he manages his own name alongside his darker HI-LO alias, which has become a fixture on labels like Drumcode and Filth on Acid. His work includes collaborations with industry titans such as Alok, Nile Rodgers, and Kylie Minogue.

Kryder, born Chris Knight, brings a grounded perspective to the project. After a career defined by residencies at Gatecrasher and massive support from BBC Radio 1, he has spent the current year in a prolific creative stretch. Following a brief hiatus from touring, he has released sixteen records in seven months, including the chart-topping ‘Eivissa’ on Size Records.

‘AEIOU’ arrives alongside a packed tour schedule for Heldens, including upcoming appearances at Tomorrowland and a headline date at Red Rocks. The track is available now on Heldeep Records.
