New Orleans-based multi-instrumentalist Brotha Josh has released his latest single, “Dancing Alone,” a soulful blend of R&B, soul, and indie influences that comes together to form the unique sound the artist calls “Indie Soul.”
“Dancing Alone” opens with dreamy chimes, setting the tone of the track to feel hazy yet inviting. A thumping bass line enters, warm and full. Subdivided percussive clicks slowly emerge, and a saxophone crescendos into focus.
Special effects give the flurry of saxophone a distinct delay, adding to the track’s smoky atmosphere. Dulcet vocals soon enter, his sweet melodic lines intertwining effortlessly with the instrumentation.

Arpeggiated synth and subtle drum kit are added to the texture as the chorus arrives, resulting in a catchy, yet mellow blend of the stacked elements. A jazzy melodic line in the saxophone snakes its way through the track, adding soul to the piece.

Brotha Josh shares that he’s trying not to let the “Millennial Malaise” set in, and his music is a perfect remedy.
As the second verse arrives, plucked strings glide along with the downbeats, propelling the piece forward. Brotha Josh steps into his voice fully in this verse and has smooth harmonies join in.
“2am it’s a long night / Make sure the captions right / Maybe Imma get a like / Before I doze off for the night”
Special effects and delayed echoes on the lyrics continue to create the dreamy feel throughout the song.
As the lyrics fade out, a beautiful instrumental solo takes over. The saxophone plays out with stunning flourishes as the groovy bass line finishes out the piece.
