Tomorrowland Around the World took place over the weekend as its first edition as a digital festival. The two-day digital music experience was spectacular and took place on the island of Pāpiliōnem. With the COVID-19 restrictions for events, let’s recap the success of the beloved festival.
Here Are The Numbers
- More than 60 of the world’s most prominent artists in EDM performed their newest tracks
- 8 stages
- More than 1 million viewers tuned in, clocking in from Japan to Mexico and Island.
- 4 different large green screen studios stationed in Boom, Belgium, Los Angeles, Sao Paolo Brazil, and Sydney, Australia. Sets came in 6m or higher, at least 8m wide, and at least 8m in depth
- Up to 38 cameras were used, including 6 4K Ultra HD cameras, virtual cameras, 750 virtual lamps per stage (drawn by hand!), and more than 300TB of raw footage collected
- Tens of different render engines processed all the data. The digital 3D environment contained 10 times more polygons and lights compared to a computer game
- Each outdoor stage held 32,000 trees and plants. Each DJ performance contained special effects, spectacular fireworks, impressive laser shows, and sound effects. Audience CGI made for a more realistic feel as well
- Scavenger hunt in the Hendrik Conscience Library allowed visitors to look for 10 books with quiz questions about Tomorrowland. The virtual library draws inspiration from the Nottebohm Room from the Conscience Heritage Library in Antwerp
- 100% of recycled PET cups from Tomorrowland 2019 became 3D printed sunglasses, courtesy of Yuma Labs
- And last but not least, the entire digital festival took only 3 months to develop. More than 200 of Tomorrowland’s passionate employees and the most talented developers got the project ready in time. Normally, something of this caliber would take 2 years.
We want to give a special shoutout to the Tomorrowland team for putting this unique musical experience together for the world. Katy Perry, David Guetta, Martin Garrix, Steve Aoki, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Charlotte de Witte, Eric Prydz, and more played from full-sized DJ booths within the green screen studios.
Hopefully next year we can return home. Until then, we hope everyone enjoyed the weekend for those that attended!
